OpenAI boss Sam Altman mocked Elon Musk’s plan to place artificial intelligence data centres into orbit by 2027, claiming that SpaceX’s planned Starmind project of launching 100,000 AI satellites were designed to mislead investors in the company’s recent IPO, which saw it reach a valuation of more than $2 trillion. The exchange on social media reignited a feud between the former friends, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015. Their relationship broke down in 2018 when Mr Altman reportedly blocked Mr Musk’s attempt to take charge of the ChatGPT creator. In 2024, Mr Musk sued Mr Altman and his company, accusing them of betraying OpenAI’s founding mission; a jury found that Mr Musk’s allegations were barred by the statute of limitations. The latest lawsuit brought about by Apple, filed on Friday, alleges that OpenAI employees have taken “secret and confidential information” relating to unreleased products. OpenAI said: “We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.”
