Artificial intelligence is reshaping filmmaking in Nepal by automating tasks like image generation, video creation, voice imitation, and storyboarding, reducing days of work to hours. For Nepali filmmakers with limited budgets and tight deadlines, this offers opportunity but raises concerns about work, ownership, and truth. AI is already used in pre-production for research, visual references, and script breakdowns, and in post-production for transcription, subtitles, noise reduction, and object removal. McKinsey has identified applications across development, production, and post-production, including pre-visualisation, editing, audio synchronisation, tagging, subtitling, and dubbing. Production companies are experimenting with AI video generators such as Higgsfield, Runway, Kling, and Seedance, plus tools like Google Veo, Adobe Firefly, and OpenAI’s Sora. These systems can turn text or reference images into short clips, test camera movement and visual styles, and build concept films, but their practical value lies in communicating ideas quickly and identifying what still needs a real crew. AI can produce options, but a filmmaker must decide which serves the story. In Nepal, filmmaking often involves adaptation to unavailable locations, changing weather, inaccessible equipment, and small crews handling multiple roles.
