Waymo, Alphabet’s driverless car company, will expand to Atlanta and Austin early next year, adding to its existing service in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. Unlike in California and Arizona, riders in Atlanta and Austin must hail the robo-cars through the Uber app due to a partnership between Waymo and Uber. Austin and Atlanta users are not guaranteed a Waymo and can decline one or adjust settings to avoid self-driving vehicles. Uber will manage and dispatch a fleet of Waymo’s fully autonomous, all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles that will grow to hundreds over time, and riders requesting UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with a Waymo for qualifying trips. Uber will handle Waymo depots, cleaning, and vehicle repair in those cities, while Waymo retains control of testing, operation, roadside assistance, and rider support. General Motors’ Cruise vehicles will also soon be deployed via the Uber app. The Waymo partnerships may relate to the company being a loss leader for Alphabet, likely costing billions in losses, according to the Associated Press. Waymo’s cars, performing about 100,000 rides per week in L.A., San Francisco, and Phoenix, have a better but not perfect safety record, following a Cruise vehicle seriously injuring a San Francisco pedestrian last year.
