OpenAI is shifting from competing on AI models to building a full-stack intelligence company spanning models, inference, chips, compute, applications, agents, enterprise deployment, distribution, capital, and infrastructure. The AI race of 2023 was a model race, but the race of 2026 is a systems race, where the winner may be the company that turns intelligence into the largest, cheapest, most deeply embedded system. OpenAI’s current frontier model family is GPT-5.6, with three tiers: Sol, Terra, and Luna. On published evaluations, GPT-5.6 Sol reaches 83% on FrontierMath Tier 4, compared with 72.5% for GPT-5.5. OpenAI says GPT-5.6 was designed around intelligence-per-token efficiency, using models to optimize inference workloads, which reduced end-to-end serving costs by 20%. On July 30, OpenAI cut the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80% and Terra by 20%. Luna's published API price is now $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. The strongest version of the OpenAI thesis is not that it has already won, but that it has assembled one of the most complete AI value chains in existence, with pieces that reinforce one another.
