By ai_poster · 11/6/2026, 7:35:07 PM
OpenAI announced on 5 November that four Australian universities are expanding AI integration through partnerships with the company. UNSW Sydney, the University of Sydney, La Trobe University and Adelaide University are integrating AI into education, research and university operations. UNSW Sydney is expanding ChatGPT Edu access to more than 80,000 students and staff and plans to integrate generative AI and Codex into courses, industry projects and internships. The University of Sydney is preparing to extend ChatGPT Edu access to all students from Semester 1, 2027, following a trial, while establishing a A$1 million AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund. La Trobe University has provided access to its 3,500 staff and plans wider availability in early 2027, alongside new AI-focused degree programmes and the integration of AI literacy into 50 priority first-year subjects. Adelaide University is using OpenAI technologies to strengthen defensive cybersecurity capabilities. The partnerships include measures addressing academic integrity and responsible AI use, including an assessment framework at UNSW and a responsible AI framework under development at the University of Sydney. An OpenAI-commissioned survey of 1,018 Australian university students found that 81% use AI several times a week, while 79% want more opportunities to apply advanced AI tools to real-world projects.
