HD Hyundai Electric is targeting AI data centers by boosting output of medium- and low-voltage breakers at its Cheongju distribution campus, as these breakers are essential for the distribution stage of electricity that powers always-on AI hubs. The company tests its vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) to withstand up to 80 kV, and verifies whether a breaker can withstand 40,000 volts (40 kV) for one minute. Breakers automatically cut off power in dangerous situations like overcurrent or short circuits. Medium- and low-voltage breakers are installed in homes, shops, and small factories, while high-voltage breakers are used in places using 1 kV or higher, such as large factories, railways, and substations. HD Hyundai Electric is looking beyond generation and transmission to focus on distribution, as AI data centers require the installation of distribution equipment such as medium- and low-voltage breakers, and more distribution equipment is needed by unit count.
