OpenAI and Anthropic both posted massive losses in their earnings results, and xAI reduced access capacity due to non-viable cost-to-revenue calculations, according to the article. OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue for September was almost $50 billion, a drop from the approaching $70 billion revenue run rate it previously indicated, and according to AI Funding Tracker it has weathered more than $20 billion in operating losses in the first half of 2026 with revenue of around $12 billion for the same period. Anthropic reported Q3 2026 revenue rising almost 1,127% year over year to $17 billion, while planning to spend more than $895 billion on compute and infrastructure over the next few years; its compute and infrastructure costs increased by $14.4 billion for the nine months ended Sept. 30, up 329% compared to the same period last year, with revenue up 47% quarter over quarter. xAI owner Elon Musk told Grok Bot users on Nov. 1 that new restrictions on access were implemented because “the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue.” Meta has committed hundreds of billions of dollars to AI development and support infrastructure despite strong early adoption of its Muse agents.
