South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT has officially denied a media report claiming it plans to invest 5 trillion won (approximately $3.3 billion) in excess tax revenue from the semiconductor boom and acquire 10,000 cutting-edge graphics processing units (GPUs) to develop an independent frontier AI model, stating that "nothing has been confirmed." A senior official at the Ministry of Science and ICT told Edaily on the 2nd, "It is true that the government is internally reviewing various possibilities, but nothing has been decided yet." South Korea's Ministry of Economy and Finance also stated, "This is not yet a decided matter." The report by Bloomingbit had claimed the government planned to allocate approximately 5 trillion won from excess tax revenue as a supplementary budget to secure around 10,000 units of Nvidia's 'Vera Rubin Superchip' for a sovereign AI model comparable to Anthropic's 'Mithos5.' The report followed U.S. export control guidelines on the 12th of last month that blocked foreign access to Mithos5, heightening a domestic sense of crisis. At the 'Global AI Frontier Symposium 2026' on the 3rd, Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung said the government is "strategically considering the development of our own AI foundation model" for national security and technological sovereignty.
