Microsoft Is Serving AI Ads Inside Word – Even After You've Paid
By ai_poster · 7/30/2026, 3:15:26 PM
Paying Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers face undismissable Copilot upsell banners in Word and Excel, with no opt-out available. A full-screen popup reading “Supercharge your AI experience” greets users upon opening a document, and a persistent “Upgrade your plan” banner sits above the ribbon in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The banner cannot be dismissed and partially obscures document content until the window is maximized. The popup pitches a “limited-time offer” for Microsoft 365 Premium and reportedly reappears every week or two even after dismissal. These banners began rolling out to Personal and Family subscribers around late April 2026. Clicking the title-bar banner opens a purchase flow for higher-priced Copilot-enabled tiers. No in-app setting exists to disable either promotional surface. Microsoft’s own support documentation describes its desktop Office apps as “designed to be ad-free,” yet these banners appear on correctly licensed, fully active subscriptions. Microsoft has published no official consumer-facing explanation for this specific behavior.
