Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, issued a warning in a short essay posted on X and Substack on Tuesday, stating there is a "precious window" to act before artificial general intelligence (AGI) arrives. Hassabis proposed a US-led coalition that would review the most advanced models to ensure they're safe before public release, a response to the White House's more hands-on approach to regulating AI. He suggested the proposed "Standards Body" might look like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and would most likely need to be industry-funded. In his essay, Hassabis said AGI was "probably only a few short years away." He wrote that "what we collectively do now will determine how the next phase of civilisation unfolds."
