Belgian-American startup Aidoptation is working on a Level-3 autonomous driving system that can initiate crash avoidance maneuvers at over 120 kph without driver intervention. Aidoptation recently received a permit from Belgian authorities to test its fully autonomous (Level 4) driving system on 100 km (62 miles) of the E313 and E314 highways around Limburg, Belgium. The testing will be conducted using a Maserati GranTurismo Folgore EV equipped with LiDAR, radar, and camera sensors. Although the permit is for a Level 4 system, Aidoptation has narrowed its ambitions to a Level 3 system for now, using the tests to fine-tune a system that can avoid high-speed crashes on highways. Level 3 systems are usually speed-limited to under 90 kph, but Aidoptation claims its system can intervene at over 120 kph.
