Elon Musk aims to have rockets blast off from Earth before the end of 2026, sending the first materials to the moon and Mars to start building colonies, with Tesla robots as the first residents to prepare infrastructure. Musk has shifted SpaceX’s focus to the moon, calling it “much faster to complete” a city there within the next 10 years, while remaining optimistic about sending material to Mars within seven years. This week, Musk filed applications with the Federal Communications Commission for a “constellation” of 100,000 satellites to improve communications and provide computing power for AI-powered devices. SpaceX founding team member Jim Cantrell stated, “The robots build the settlement before the humans show up.” On Thursday, SpaceX launched 29 Starlink satellites into low earth orbit using its Falcon 9 reusable rocket, which has made 36 return flights. Musk also plans to engineer a larger transport rocket than Starship. His latest forecast is that the first self-sustaining cities will be on Mars between 2045 and 2055.
