U.S. officials are reportedly investigating how Chinese artificial-intelligence companies access Nvidia’s advanced processors through overseas data centers, a review that could close a loophole in Washington’s chip restrictions. The Commerce Department division enforcing semiconductor export controls is examining how Chinese AI developers legally rent Nvidia-powered computing capacity located outside China, according to Bloomberg. Unlike physically smuggling processors, Chinese companies can access Nvidia GPUs hosted in data centers in countries where the chips can legally be sold. Nvidia has tightened its own controls, cutting its list of authorized Asian AI-chip buyers by more than half and increasing inspections in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Fiscal first-quarter revenue surged 85% to $81.6 billion, while Data Center revenue jumped 92% to $75.2 billion. Nvidia expects second-quarter revenue of roughly $91 billion, assuming no Data Center compute revenue from China. Shares closed Thursday at $218.78, up about 17% in 2026. The immediate catalyst is Nvidia’s August 26 earnings report, with focus on Data Center growth, China commentary, gross margins and whether tougher screening affects international demand. Broader restrictions covering rented computing capacity would show geopolitical risk remains a meaningful constraint on Nvidia’s growth.
