India's top-5 IT services giants—Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCLTech, and Tech Mahindra—built a $250 billion-$300 billion industry employing more than six million people, but their employer brand is now under pressure as artificial intelligence reshapes the sector. TCS's recent decision to pause large-scale hiring amid AI integration signals a broader transformation, with firms prioritizing specialized AI talent over large-scale workforce expansion. According to Anil Ethanur of talent intelligence firm Xpheno, the IT services cohort was pushed down the aspiration pyramid by the funded tech startup boom, and the extended low-hiring phase and developments in the US client market have further negatively impacted desirability. Headcount additions across the top-5 firms fell by 7,389 in FY2026, reversing gains of 12,718 in FY25, and TCS announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs. Xpheno's June 2026 Tech Jobs Outlook report projected active technology hiring demand at 96,000 positions, a 28-month low and a 14% decline from the previous month, with full-time technology jobs down 24% year-over-year, entry-level demand down 44%, and senior-level openings down 67%. Shubhranshu Singh noted that Indian IT companies built scale but not powerful global technology brands, with their reputation resting on reliability, process discipline, and cost efficiency rather than invention or intellectual property.
