Kodiak AI, Inc. announced it delivered the first two Western Star 49X trucks equipped with the Kodiak Driver to Atlas Energy Solutions in September, building on the companies' collaboration in the Permian Basin. These are the first of 65 Western Star 49X trucks Kodiak will deliver to fulfill Atlas's initial order of 100 Kodiak-equipped driverless trucks, with the order on track to be completed in the first half of 2027. Manufactured by Daimler Truck North America, the Western Star 49X heavy-duty truck is designed for harsh operating conditions like those in the Permian, and the transition to the platform was previously announced in August. The two new additions bring Atlas's overall owned-and-operated fleet to 37 driverless trucks, the largest fleet of its kind in the world; these trucks operate with no human in the cab and, as of June 30, 2026, had surpassed 40,000 hours of cumulative driverless service. Atlas's Western Star trucks are the first vehicles equipped with Kodiak's seventh-generation (Gen7) hardware platform and the first day-cab autonomous trucks deployed into commercial service. Kodiak said Gen7 provides nearly 50% more compute power than Gen6, and stress testing indicates Gen7 SensorPods and compute enclosures are expected to have nearly 50% greater operational lifetimes than prior generations.
