Former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke has joined Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT), an independent body that holds Anthropic to its mission of responsibly developing artificial intelligence for the long-term benefit of humanity. Bernanke, who led the Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014, earned a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2022, and is a Distinguished Fellow at the Brookings Institution, will lend his insight to Anthropic’s economic research and bring his expertise to how AI is changing the economy, according to a Wednesday (July 9) press release. Anthropic Co-Founder and President Daniela Amodei stated that Bernanke’s career studying how economies react to disruptive moments will help the company anticipate how advanced AI affects workforces and economies. Bernanke noted that Anthropic’s unique governance structure aims to ensure long-run benefits of AI outweigh risks. New LTBT trustees are selected by existing ones, are independent of Anthropic’s management and investors, and are compensated only for time and service with no equity or profit share. Other trustees include Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar.
