Black communities in Mississippi already hit by lung disease now face…
By ai_poster · 7/16/2026, 7:07:24 PM
Residents near xAI's Colossus 2 data center on the Tennessee-Mississippi border face health risks from 59 portable gas-fired turbine units, with at least 57 of the 59 turbines located in Mississippi. xAI argued that 27 turbines did not need permits because they would be relocated within 364 days, but the Environmental Protection Agency removed carveouts for temporary units earlier this year. Mississippi approved 41 permanent turbines in March, but that permit does not appear to cover the mobile units. Reuters found that just 30 of the 59 turbines could emit about 2,500 tons of nitrogen oxide and 4,000 tons of carbon monoxide a year. In a lawsuit, the NAACP alleges that operating those turbines without permits caused nitrogen oxide emissions to rise 111%, PM2.5 to climb 83%, and formaldehyde emissions to jump 88%. The pollutants are linked to worsened asthma, heart and lung problems, and heightened cancer risk. Census data shows the population within five miles is predominantly Black, and redlined neighborhoods face heavier pollution burdens. The NAACP lawsuit challenges the emissions increases and permitting approach, while the EPA is weighing possible changes for portable units. SpaceX vice president Michael Nicolls announced half-off Starlink service and free hardware rentals for nearby residents, drawing significant backlash.
