Start-up: Using synthetic data to power the AI economy

Athenatech.ai, a Malaysian start-up founded in 2024, is addressing AI development challenges by offering a synthetic data platform called AxxonAI, which generates artificial datasets that replicate real data patterns without containing personal information. Co-founder and CEO Sonny Dey emphasizes that synthetic data bypasses restrictions on real-time personal data, making the technology viable in regulated industries under Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and equivalent overseas frameworks. Clients provide demographic profiles, behavioural parameters, or aggregated patterns—none constituting personal data—and AxxonAI produces statistically coherent datasets for modelling, forecasting, or AI training. The platform launched its first version in February this year, with early pilots benchmarking synthetic output against real data and recording accuracy rates above 85%, though Sonny notes results vary by project and testing is ongoing. In a healthcare pilot, a hospital in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, sought to identify patient segments in Sections 16 and 17 at risk for diabetes; bound by patient confidentiality, it provided age brackets, gender ratios, socioeconomic profiles, and visit frequency data, from which Athenatech generated a synthetic dataset of roughly 5,000 to 6,000 patient profiles, matching internal records above 85%. A separate project on cervical and ovarian cancer models family tree data from genome sequencing to generate a disease risk probability index, but is at an earlier stage, with Sonny stating accuracy is moving gradually and not yet at 90% in certain models.
