OpenAI’s finance AI demo leaves governance questions unanswered

OpenAI used a recent webinar to demonstrate how its finance team is using artificial intelligence to transform the finance function, but attendees' repeated questions about governance went unanswered during the audience Q&A. Participants asked how ChatGPT Work addresses data governance, internal controls, agent oversight and security, but presenters spent the demo and Q&A mostly discussing forecasting models, data platforms, workflow automation and the company’s new Sites feature. The questions reflected a major hurdle to enterprise AI adoption in corporate finance, as leaders want answers on where data is stored, who has access, how controls are enforced, and whether workflows align with SOX requirements and existing information technology general controls. The webinar’s hosts were Kyle Kober, director of product finance at OpenAI; Stephanie Struck, OpenAI’s head of product finance; and Jackson Wang, a data scientist and member of the technical staff. They argued AI is changing how finance teams operate, demonstrating how OpenAI uses ChatGPT Work to automate forecasting, reconcile financial models, build interactive dashboards and increase collaboration. Wang joked, “Make forecasting great again, guys,” after describing how AI made forecasting “a lot more fun.” While presenters focused on speed and interactivity, attendees asked in the chat how AI fits within finance’s existing control environment. The Q&A instead centered on talent demands, data architecture, connecting to different systems, build vs. buy strategies and workflow automation, with repeated discussion on data quality and creating a trusted single source of truth.
