Elon Musk predicts that AI and robotics will make most job skills obsolete within 20 years, describing it as "a supersonic tsunami" and "the most radical change that we've ever seen." In a conversation with investor and podcaster Nikhil Kamath posted on Sunday, Musk said that in less than 20 years, "working will be optional" because machines can do nearly everything society needs. Despite this, Musk noted that his own children, who agree that AI will probably make their skills unnecessary, still want to go to college. Musk stated, "I don't think you have to go to college," but added that he sees higher education as a social environment, saying, "If you want to go to college for social reasons, I think that's a reason to go — to be around people your own age in a learning environment." He advised that if one does attend, they should "try to learn as much as possible across a wide range of subjects." The article also references Steven Mintz, a history professor at the University of Texas at Austin, who said AI has revealed how shallow and mechanized much of higher education is, and Anastasia Berg, an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of California, Irvine, who warned that overreliance on AI is eroding foundational abilities. James Ransom, a research fellow at University College London, advised Gen Z to understand the tasks inside roles and show how they can supervise and scale AI more effectively.
