Andrew Garfield commented on Amazon MGM Studios' decision to drop the Luca Guadagnino-directed film "Artificial," about Sam Altman and OpenAI, saying he "was and wasn't [surprised]" and that Amazon "were nothing but supportive" during production. The Simon Rich-scripted film chronicles OpenAI's firing and rehiring of Altman in 2023. Neon acquired the nearly completed $40 million film after Amazon MGM Studios announced it believed it would "be better served if it were released by a different studio." Amazon's decision came months after the company signed a major partnership with OpenAI, including a $50 billion investment, and less than a year after Altman attended Amazon boss Jeff Bezos's wedding. Garfield said he did not reach out to Altman for research, stating, "I wouldn't know how to. I don't have his number. I don't have his email," but added he would "be very excited and curious to talk with him." Cooper Hoffman, whose role has not been revealed, said he was not surprised Amazon dropped the film, remarking, "I’m shocked they picked it up in the first place." Neon has committed to launching an awards campaign for "Artificial" for this year's Oscar race.
