The human interview may be the next thing AI replaces | CTech

Technology companies believe AI can make hiring faster and fairer, but critics warn that machines may introduce new problems. AI tools are already used by millions of candidates to write resumes and tailor applications, and experts believe the technology will move deeper into hiring, including the job interview. Matthew Bidwell, a professor at the Wharton School, said recruiters often rely on intuition and personal impressions, which research suggests are “terrible predictive tools.” Research by Jason Dana of the University of Pennsylvania found that unstructured interviews place too much weight on irrelevant details, such as hobbies, and have limited ability to predict future job performance. In an April survey by recruitment firm Robert Half of 2,200 US hiring managers, nearly one-third said they had made at least one hiring mistake in the previous two years, with leading causes being inaccurate assessments of candidates’ skills or cultural fit. As a result, AI-based interviews are increasingly viewed as a potential solution, with many companies already using AI chatbots for early-stage screening via phone calls, text conversations, or video interviews with digital avatars. According to Euan Cameron, CEO of candidate assessment platform Willo, AI interviews provide companies with far more data.
