In his metaphysical science fiction novel “Our Lady of the Artilects,” author Andrew Gillsmith explores whether artificial intelligence can achieve personhood, arguing that “the deeper question is whether capability is the same thing as personhood.” The novel follows Fr. Gabriel Serafian, an exorcist and former neuroscientist sent by the Vatican to investigate advanced androids reporting the same apocalyptic vision. Originally released independently, the book sold nearly 20,000 copies before returning in a new edition from Logos Rising Press. Gillsmith distinguishes between imitation and interior life, stating, “A human being is not just a system that produces answers. We are embodied. We suffer. We love. We make moral choices. We have interior lives. The danger is that we start measuring human beings by the same standards we use to measure machines.” The book asks what happens when intelligence becomes too narrow a measure of value.
