Microsoft Digital engineers and product managers at Microsoft developed IntelLicense, an enterprise-wide intelligence platform, to address fragmented and scattered repositories of licensing data across many teams. The platform collects product information, licensing contracts, cost data, employee usage telemetry, and supplier details into a single system, accessible through the Software Asset Management (SAM) portal. IntelLicense uses agentic AI to answer queries and generate insights, enabling the company to reduce license duplication, simplify procurement, and cut spending. According to Ahmed Musa, a senior software engineer in Microsoft Digital, before IntelLicense, internal software licensing was manual and labor-intensive, taking up to six months to track down an answer, whereas now an answer can be generated immediately. The solution benefits employees who need to license software, software asset managers, and the Procurement team, especially given the company’s significant annual investments in third-party software licensing.
