Sonny Gray "Open" To Discussing No-Trade Clause If Red Sox Sell
By ai_poster · 6/24/2026, 12:09:21 AM
Veteran right-hander Sonny Gray is "open" to discussing waiving his full no-trade protection if the Red Sox decide to sell at the deadline, he told Tim Healey of the Boston Globe. The 36-year-old, who landed in Boston via an offseason trade that sent right-hander Richard Fitts and minor league lefty Brandon Clarke to St. Louis, said, "If someone came to me from the Red Sox and made a decision that that’s the direction that this team was going to go, I would be open for a conversation." The Red Sox are buried in the AL East cellar with the American League’s second-worst record. Gray, the 2023 American League Cy Young runner-up, boasts a 3.12 ERA in 69 1/3 innings. When Gray was traded from St. Louis to Boston, he restructured his contract to pay him a $31MM salary this season with a $10MM buyout on a $30MM mutual option for the 2027 season. The Cards kicked in $20MM to cover roughly half of that one-year commitment, meaning a new team would owe the prorated portion of the remaining $11MM in salary plus the $10MM buyout.
