Elon Musk publicly changed his view on Anthropic, admitting he underestimated the company and describing it as the current leader in the industry. Responding to a post on X that resurfaced one of his remarks from September last year, Musk acknowledged that his earlier prediction about Anthropic had been incorrect. Replying to the post on Thursday, Musk said, "I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI." He also praised Anthropic's Claude Mythos and Fable models, saying no rival had released systems of similar quality, and added that he expected the company to introduce Mythos 2 in the future. The comments mark a sharp shift from Musk's earlier criticism; in February, he had described Anthropic as "misanthropic and evil." After one X user suggested Musk could disconnect Anthropic from SpaceX infrastructure because the companies compete in AI, Musk rejected the idea, writing, "And I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor." Anthropic became one of SpaceX's largest customers after signing a deal in May to lease the Colossus 1 supercomputer, which includes more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and provides 300 megawatts of computing capacity. Under the agreement, Anthropic is expected to pay about $1.25 billion every month through May 2029 in a contract valued at roughly $40 billion in revenue for SpaceX's xAI unit.
