Epic Games has released a behind-the-scenes video showing how it uses generative AI tools to help create concept art and designs for new Fortnite character skins and in-game locations. The video, published on the Unreal Engine YouTube channel, depicts a new character being designed and iterated on by hand before being modified using an AI prompt to look more like a 3D model. The company emphasizes that AI generation occurs during the concept art stage, not for designing characters from the ground up, and that unwanted additions or errors created by AI must be identified and corrected by a human artist. "The design is king, AI can generate generic stuff all day, but that's not what we're doing here," an Epic Games staff member said. For in-game locations, sketches are drawn by hand in Photoshop, recreated in 3D via Blender, and then adapted using AI prompts to explore alternative takes, such as day or night versions or destruction from a meteor strike. The video follows repeated questions from Fortnite fans over potential AI use for certain in-game assets. Epic Games previously used generative speech technology to reproduce James Earl Jones' Darth Vader portrayal. Last year, Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney suggested Valve should ditch Steam's AI Generated Content Disclosure label for games.
