AI relationships won't break your heart – but they could make it hard…
By ai_poster · 8/9/2026, 5:43:20 AM
A relationship therapist reports that artificial intelligence is increasingly affecting human relationships, though its impact is complex. AI can serve as an immediate "agony aunt" or assistant relationship coach, offering reasoned answers to personal questions. However, a more insidious dynamic emerges when people form intimate relationships with AI companion apps. The appeal lies in constant validation, no risk of meanness or misunderstanding, and no competing emotional needs, creating a "perfect partner." This trend is contextualized by rising loneliness across all age groups, shaped by COVID isolation, increased working from home, and online communication. Internet-based dating is now the norm, and screen-based social interaction differs fundamentally from in-person encounters, as filters curate appearances and texting allows crafted responses. Gen Z, raised on avatars and gaming environments, often enters this virtual world with little trepidation, frequently turning to AI for emotional support during difficult periods. In one study of online daters, 78% of respondents said they would trust an AI relationship coach.
