Microsoft’s Copilot for Legal, launched in October, is a long-term move that will eventually be available to potentially 100,000s of lawyers worldwide, Legal Vertical leader Carina Negreanu told Artificial Lawyer. Negreanu, who joined with the team from Robin AI, said the legal capabilities will be automatically available to those signed up to Copilot, which is over 30 million people globally, and will automatically make itself known to users if it detects legal documents. Copilot for Legal will tap both OpenAI and Anthropic models and at present offers three core workflows, plus 20 skills, and connectors to a growing group of legal tech companies, including some supplying data. Negreanu said accuracy is a key focus and they are seeing 70%-plus acceptance rates already for suggested review changes. Copilot for Legal will also engage with Excel, Powerpoint, and Teams. Negreanu referred to the benefit of centrality — creating a working environment for lawyers where they don’t need to leave — with Word as the “base layer” of nearly all legal work. The article said Microsoft means to stay in the legal vertical this time, and that what is on offer will expand, meaning legal tech companies’ offerings will inevitably sometimes be replaceable with what Copilot for Legal offers.
