Former OpenAI executive Kevin Weil has sought a valuation of at least $750 million for his new AI science startup, according to three people with knowledge of the discussions. Weil is aiming to raise $150 million in the round, though the details have not been finalized and could still change. Weil, who departed OpenAI earlier this year, previously served as chief product officer and oversaw science initiatives, including Prism, a workspace designed to bring frontier models into scientists' workflows. Sources say he has pitched the startup as a way to gather scientific data for AI models. His fundraising signals AI's next frontier shifting from chatbots to science, as a growing number of OpenAI and Google alums launch startups to accelerate scientific discovery. Weil is not the only senior OpenAI leader to leave; Brad Lightcap, the company's longtime former chief operating officer, announced he was leaving after eight years, and Fidji Simo stepped down as CEO of applications in July. Weil's startup enters a competitive race, with Periodic Labs, founded by former OpenAI researcher Liam Fedus and former Google DeepMind researcher Ekin Dogus Cubuk, building AI scientists alongside autonomous laboratories, with investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, Jeff Bezos, and Eric Schmidt. Last week, Google's chief scientist Jeff Dean announced he and three colleagues were leaving to start Discovery Loop, an AI startup focused on science and engineering.
