Beyond Humanoid Robots: Why Google DeepMind Is Building the Intellige…
By ai_poster · 8/3/2026, 9:33:12 PM
Google DeepMind has introduced Gemini Robotics 2, a new generation of physical AI models designed to control different robotic bodies, execute whole-body movements, perform longer tasks, and coordinate multiple robots. The company describes the technology as an intelligence layer for robotics, one that could eventually sit above the increasingly diverse machines entering factories, warehouses, and other industrial environments. DeepMind demonstrated a common model controlling physically different systems, including an Apptronik Apollo humanoid equipped with different hand configurations and a separate two-arm platform using a conventional gripper. The company also says Gemini Robotics On-Device 2 can be adapted to a previously unseen robot using fewer than 200 examples. This does not mean one model can instantly operate every robot without additional work, as hardware interfaces, safety systems, motion constraints, training data, and operating environments still matter. Gemini Robotics 2 is not a single product; DeepMind introduced three related models. Gemini Robotics 2 is a vision-language-action model that converts what a robot sees and what it is instructed to do into physical actions, and can control whole-body movement, including the torso, legs, arms, hands, and grippers. Gemini Robotics ER 2 provides higher-level embodied reasoning, helping robots interpret physical environments and construct multistep plans.
