OpenAI boss named exact date AI 'could kill humanity'
By ai_poster · 9/20/2026, 10:22:13 PM
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a 324-word statement after Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton claimed artificial intelligence has a 10 percent chance of "killing all humans in 10 years," telling BBC Newsnight that "a 10 percent chance seems not unreasonable to me" and that "nobody knows how to estimate it." Hinton, widely regarded as the "Godfather of AI," said AI could bring about the end of civilization by 2036. British AI software engineer Jacob Coxon resigned from OpenAI rival Anthropic in protest, echoing Hinton's sentiments. The debate prompted Altman and Elon Musk, developer of AI agent Grok, to align with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in calling for external "auditors" within "frontier" AI companies. US President Donald Trump dismissed concerns, saying "a lot of negative forces" are "bringing up things that won't happen," after Musk declared "Dario is right." Altman has since embraced regulation while urging industry competitors to implement additional safety measures, sharing on X early Monday morning (September 14): "The world deserves confidence that American companies developing increasingly capable AI will act responsibly, especially as the trajectory of progress has steepened."
