OpenAI vs Apple text messages reveal something about Apple, but proba…
By ai_poster · 8/6/2026, 2:56:22 AM
OpenAI has released a text chain and email exchange in response to Apple's lawsuit alleging that OpenAI, with help from former Apple employees, is stealing Apple trade secrets. The suit claims a 25-year Apple veteran and a decade-long iPhone electrical engineer held onto systems and asked OpenAI interviewees from Apple to share proprietary information. OpenAI denied the allegations, and it was revealed that Apple's counsel had contacted the wrong person, mixing up Lui Chang with OpenAI's counsel, Che Chang. In its response, OpenAI published messages between Lui Chang and an unidentified current Apple employee, which appear to show the employee asking Chang for technical help and a "brief refresh" on a redacted topic, with Chang replying and pointing the employee to another Apple contact. OpenAI wrote on its company blog on Monday that Apple's "careless, aggressive and oddly personal lawsuit sadly doesn’t live up to that reputation." Apple has not confirmed the messages, but the article notes the amount of redacted information lends credence to their authenticity. The messages suggest the interaction was mundane rather than corporate espionage.
