CLAB has recruited Dr. Hwang Soonwook, an expert in high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. According to CLAB on August 6, Dr. Hwang is recognized as one of the leading experts in the field of super high-performance computing (HPC) in Korea. As the former Director General of National Supercomputing Headquarters at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), he supervised the construction and operation of ‘Nurion’, the fifth national supercomputer. Over the past 30 years, he has led research and development as well as national projects in HPC, large-scale distributed computing, cloud, and AI supercomputing. He also served as a visiting scholar at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in the United States, and has recently expanded his expertise to large-scale GPU cluster-based generative AI and large language model (LLM) infrastructure operation technologies. With the addition of Dr. Hwang, CLAB plans to strengthen its competitiveness in the design and construction of next-generation AI data centers and professional services. Dr. Hwang stated, “Competitiveness in the AI era cannot be achieved solely by securing high-performance GPUs; it also requires system architecture and operational technology to support them efficiently,” adding, “Based on my experience establishing and operating national HPC infrastructure, I will contribute to improving the competitiveness of AI computing infrastructure by applying this expertise to
