The user, who described themselves as an AI skeptic, took a photo and entered the prompt "identify this plant" into Google Gemini on their phone. The app provided instructions to either upload a photo or describe the plant, including specifics such as leaves, flowers, growth habitat, and environment. The user attached an image they had already taken, and the results appeared immediately. Gemini identified the mystery plant as Cleome hassleriana, commonly known as the spider flower, and provided the botanical name Cleome hassleriana or Tarenaya hassleriana. The user confirmed that Google Gemini was correct. In addition to the name, the app gave details on the plant's key characteristics, including its flowers, foliage, growth habit, care, and growing tips. The user noted that for accurate identification, a crisp, clear shot with a single flower framed in the center is needed, as a cluttered background can trip up an algorithm.
