Apps created by AI are flooding Apple’s App Store, but few are being downloaded, and without policy adjustments, these “vibe-coded” products risk harming developers, consumers, and platforms. Non-technical users can now create functioning software in a week or afternoon using AI models, a practice sometimes hailed as democratization but also exploited by grifters submitting buggy apps for quick profit. Data from Sensor Tower shows approximately 600,000 new apps appeared on Apple’s App Store in the full year of 2025, a 30 per cent year-on-year increase, with 560,000 new apps in the first half of 2026 alone, suggesting at least a doubling for the year. Apple disallows apps that are repackaged web content, buggy, leaky, unoptimized, or that generate and run their own code, which would block many vibe-coded apps. The surge challenges traditional vetting, shifting platform-holders from curators of quality software to security guards checking an accelerating stream of garbage for harmful content.
