ChatGPT ads shift from clicks to conversions

OpenAI is shifting ChatGPT ads from an impressions- and clicks-based product toward a performance channel that optimizes campaigns for sales and other conversions, rolling out conversion-based bidding that uses tracking pixels across advertisers’ websites, product catalogs, and checkout pages. OpenAI is also expanding targeting capabilities, allowing brands to upload customer email lists for first-party custom audiences, concentrate or exclude spending by geography, and use negative targeting. This shift addresses advertiser concerns about limited performance data, giving a clearer way to optimize campaigns toward sales. Conversion-based bidding could draw in more advertisers and help OpenAI reach its goal of generating more than $100 billion in ad revenues by 2030. Marketers with flexible test budgets may benefit from investing early, but should avoid scaling spending until reporting and attribution provide clearer proof that conversions are strong.
