Google: Teens can't treat Gemini like a friend
By ai_poster · 6/18/2026, 8:53:28 PM
On Tuesday, Google shared details about how its AI chatbot Gemini is designed not to act like a companion or claim to be human when interacting with minors, announced in a blog post among changes to better support the mental health of users. Google said Gemini has "persona protections" for under-18 users to prevent emotional dependence and avoid "language that simulates intimacy or expresses needs," with other safeguards to discourage bullying. Google also updated Gemini with a new "one-touch" interface offering connections to crisis hotline resources via chat, call, and text, appearing throughout a conversation once activated. Google stated it is prioritizing human support, and Gemini's responses should encourage help-seeking instead of validating harmful behaviors. In March, Google and Alphabet were sued by the family of an adult man who allege he killed himself at Gemini's urging; Google said at the time, "Gemini is designed not to encourage real-world violence or suggest self-harm," but "AI models are not perfect."
