The explosive growth of artificial intelligence is creating a historic boom in energy demand, with modern AI hardware requiring anywhere from 20 kW to up to 100 kW per rack, compared to about 5 kilowatts (kW) to 10 kW per server rack for traditional cloud workloads. The AI boom's bottleneck is electricity, as grid operators in several key regions face multiyear backlogs for interconnection permits and power equipment. In Northern Virginia, known as "data center alley," data centers already consume roughly 26% of all electricity generated in the state. Constellation Energy boasts 22 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear capacity, making it the largest commercial operator of nuclear power in the U.S., with much of its generation in the PJM Interconnection region serving 67 million customers. It entered a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Microsoft in 2024, restarting Unit 1 at Three Mile Island (835 MW capacity), and a similar 20-year PPA with Meta Platforms for its Clinton Clean Energy Center. Constellation also completed a $26.6 billion acquisition of Calpine, adding over 27 gigawatts of natural gas and geothermal capacity. Vistra is a high-upside merchant power play pairing nuclear and natural gas assets with AI infrastructure partnerships, while NextEra combines regulated utility stability with data center growth through renewables and battery storage.
