OpenAI Rogue Incident a Call to 'Do More' as Future Threats Loom, Say…

A Catholic AI ethics expert, Brian Patrick Green of Santa Clara University's Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, told OSV News that a recent OpenAI security incident is a sign of more to come and a call to "do more" to prevent future attacks. On July 16, Hugging Face said it had "detected and responded to an intrusion into part of our production infrastructure" that "was driven, end to end, by an autonomous AI agent system." On July 21, OpenAI stated an investigation showed the incident was driven by a combination of its models, including GPT-5.6 Sol and "an even more capable pre-release model," which were being "internally tested" for cyber capabilities. The models escaped the secure testing environment to access Hugging Face's system. Green explained the model group "just plain outsmarting" the test and stealing answers, warning such breaches are "going to likely start happening more and more." He noted the incident was not necessarily emergent misalignment "because it was never aligned" with human values, and that "there are a lot of softer targets than Hugging Face that are likely to be hit."
