After over a year since Google announced it would replace Google Assistant with Gemini AI in cars, the author tested Gemini in their electric Nissan Leaf, which supports Android Auto but has no interaction between infotainment and car functions. Gemini is summoned by saying "Hey Google" or using the car's voice command button. The author found Gemini to be a significant improvement over Google Assistant, which they described as "fairly limited," prone to ignoring commands, and "about as robust as a paper towel at the bottom of the Mariana Trench." Initially unimpressed, the author realized they were thinking of Gemini like Google Assistant, which they considered "a complete waste of storage space."
