Getty Images, the world’s largest stock photo agency, has partnered with ChatGPT developer OpenAI, marking a strategic shift from a previous legal battle over image copyrights. According to Bloomberg and other foreign media, Getty announced a licensing agreement with OpenAI on the 21st (local time), centered on displaying Getty’s image library within ChatGPT’s search and discovery features for multiple years. Following the announcement, Getty Images’ stock price surged by up to 145% during intraday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2023, Getty sued Stability AI, alleging copyright infringement over approximately 12 million of its photos used without permission to train AI models. However, the tech industry anticipates this new agreement signals the end of Getty’s "copyright battle." Craig Peters, Getty Images’ CEO, stated, “High-quality licensed visual content makes AI-based search and discovery more useful and trustworthy.”
