Google notified Assistant users on August 4 that the assistant will be permanently removed from all Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto vehicles beginning September 4, 2026, with no opt-out and no rollback. The rollout "may take a few weeks to reach everyone," and once Gemini takes over, users cannot restore Google Assistant. Cars with Google built-in retain Google Assistant past September 4, while Google TV devices, smart speakers, and smart home displays are outside this phase. The transition eliminates specific features with no confirmed Gemini equivalent, including Interpreter Mode, which enabled real-time bidirectional spoken translation between 26 languages and was removed earlier this year, not supported in Gemini as of July 2026. Family Bell announcements, Birthday Reminder notifications, automated daily updates, and voice-based photo commands were also cut. Google has suggested setting up Routines as a workaround for some removed features.
