General Motors is preparing a connected-car upgrade that will bring a more capable artificial intelligence assistant to millions of Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC vehicles. The GM Google Gemini AI system will reach eligible vehicles through a software update during 2026. General Motors says approximately four million vehicles in the United States from model year 2022 and newer may qualify, provided they have Google built-in. The initial rollout will support vehicles using U.S. English as their default assistant language, with additional markets and languages expected to follow. Gemini will replace Google Assistant in supported vehicles and provide more conversational interactions, allowing drivers to ask follow-up questions without repeating every detail. The assistant can help with calls, messages, music and selected vehicle settings. Google says Gemini can use information from the owner’s manual to answer questions about vehicle functions, cargo capacity, warning indicators and other features. The system is primarily an intelligent voice assistant and should not be confused with autonomous driving. GM’s Super Cruise system remains a separate driver-assistance technology, permitting hands-free driving on compatible roads while the driver must continue watching traffic. GM has announced a more advanced eyes-off driving system for 2028, beginning with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Eligibility will depend on the model year, infotainment hardware, region, language settings and the presence of Google built-in.
