More than 130 civil society organisations and over 160 individuals, including current or former employees of Google, OpenAI and Google DeepMind, signed a joint statement demanding technology companies and governments halt the use of artificial intelligence in military kill chains. The statement, published by Access Now and co-signed by Amnesty International and others, warns that AI systems in military targeting accelerate assaults, risking violations of international humanitarian law. Signatories call on tech companies to refrain from contracts with military agencies implicated in violations and to stop selling AI decision-support systems for kill-chain targeting. The statement names Anthropic's Claude and Palantir's Maven Smart System as supporting US and Israeli military planning during strikes on Iran, and notes OpenAI agreed to supply AI services to the US Department of Defense. It reports nearly 2,000 targets were struck in Iran within 48 hours, attributing speed to AI-assisted target generation. The statement references Israel's use of AI-assisted targeting systems in Gaza, including tools named Lavender, Gospel and Where's Daddy, and cites a UN commission finding that genocide has been committed, alongside reporting that Palestinian deaths have surpassed 72,000.
