The Department of Finance has expanded the number of AI models available through its whole-of-government service GovAI, adding the Gemma family from Google, Nemotron from Nvidia, and Palmyra models from Writer. These join existing models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Mistral. GovAI is operated by the Department of Finance and offered as a chat-based service to public service staff and as a secure API gateway. The chat service is in a beta trial with Australian Public Service staff, with all models hosted onshore and data processing within Australia. Finance indicated openness to offshore models via its “model brokerage service,” targeted at technical teams building applications. For the brokerage service, agencies may request offshore-hosted models only after risk assessments and controls are applied; onshore models remain the default, and offshore use is an exception subject to governance and security requirements. Agencies are responsible for their use of models obtained through the brokerage service.
