National Australia Bank (NAB) has become the first Australian bank to deploy conversational AI data tools via Databricks’ Genie, allowing staff to query complex datasets using natural language and reducing data development time by 2-4 days per use case. The technology shifts from static reporting to dynamic, real-time insights by translating plain-English business questions into governed SQL queries instantly, eliminating the bottleneck of waiting days for technical experts. NAB is leveraging these insights to power its "Customer Brain" system, with a primary success metric observed in transaction dispute management, where proactive customer communication has led to a 30% reduction in calls from customers seeking status updates. "We can see the difference it makes - customers who are proactively informed throughout the process are 30% less likely to call to get information or for peace of mind," said Jessica Cuthbertson, NAB Executive for Data and Analytics. The rollout is currently focused on the analytics community before a wider business pilot, with governed SQL queries ensuring auditable answers and access-controlled data sets preventing unauthorized exposure. "This is about turning data into action," Ms Cuthbertson said. "In banking, we must balance speed with strong governance, and this approach lets us do both."
