Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay titled “Our position on open-weights models,” addressing the open-source AI issue. Anthropic had been notably absent from a recent industry letter driven by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, which nearly forty companies signed—thirty-seven precisely—including OpenAI and Google. Amodei stressed that his company is not against open-weight models in general, distinguishing open weights (the numbers) from the broader open source. He does not want a ban but does want mandatory safety testing before release, an area where his company already has a head start. Amodei acknowledged candidly: “It would protect US AI companies from competition, but that has never been my goal.” The article also notes that OpenAI and Anthropic, while arch-rivals, are quietly on the same side in Washington, and that AI investors are currently torn between being terrified of AI spending or embracing it.
