Business Insider’s six-part series "The Great Coding Reset" examined how AI coding tools are reshaping software engineering. AI’s breakneck speed surprised observers: in early May, tokenmaxxing—using AI as much as possible—went mainstream, with companies using leaderboards to encourage experimentation. Weeks later, Uber’s COO said spiraling token costs were hard to justify, Amazon shut down an internal leaderboard, and by June companies focused on reining in ballooning budgets. Engineers’ views changed over weeks or days, with surging productivity, experimentation, and some developers leaving the industry. Engineers are not a monolith: for every engineer worried about AI automating parts of their job, another joyfully built with new tools. One developer said he gets more done with AI but is wary about giving it too much control. Survey results showed one respondent felt AI made their job "worse in many ways," while another said it allowed solving more complex problems while feeling in control. Junior developers’ futures remain unclear, as many engineers now act as AI managers reviewing AI-generated code, and companies vet AI chops for coding jobs.
