The facility evaluates products including circuit breakers, transformers, cables, and switchgears, conducting destructive short-circuit tests to ensure equipment can withstand extreme fault conditions. "Power equipment cannot be sold without certification," said Woo Sung-han, director and head of the institute, noting that every product must undergo performance verification. The institute has testing capabilities comparable to global power giants like ABB and houses Korea's only privately-owned 1,000-megavolt-ampere (MVA) short-circuit generator. The importance of these capabilities has increased sharply amid the AI data center boom, particularly in the United States, as AI data centers consume significantly more electricity per server rack and require highly stable, uninterrupted power. Even minor design modifications to components like switchboards often require full system recertification, making testing speed critical.
